Feminine Ordinal Indicator ª

The feminine ordinal indicator is a small raised, often underlined, letter a used in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Galician to mark feminine ordinal numbers, much as English uses 'st' or 'nd'. It follows the numeral directly, so 1ª means 'primera' or 'primeira'. It also appears in abbreviations such as Sra. written in the older raised style.

How to type ª

Windows

Hold Alt and type 166 on the numeric keypad (Num Lock on), then release Alt. Alt 166 uses the code page 437.
Hold Alt and type 0170 on the numeric keypad (Num Lock on), then release Alt. Alt 0170 uses the Windows-1252 code page.
In Microsoft Word or Outlook: type 00AA then press Alt + X.
Open Character Map (search “Character Map” in Start), tick “Advanced view”, search for “feminine ordinal indicator”, then Select and Copy.

Mac

Good to know

Don’t mix it up: Often confused with superscript a ᵃ (U+1D43), a phonetic modifier letter, and with a plain letter a formatted as superscript.

Tip: Use the masculine indicator º for masculine nouns (1º piso) and ª for feminine ones (1ª planta).

Display: the character itself is always the same code point, but its shape comes from the font on the device showing it. If you see an empty box, the font lacks this glyph—the text is still correct.
