Numero Sign №

The numero sign № combines N and a superscript o and means “number.” It is standard in Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, and other languages that use Cyrillic script, where the Latin abbreviation No. is not used. In English it appears in product names, invoices, and vintage-style branding, such as house or item numbers.

How to type №

Windows

In Microsoft Word or Outlook: type 2116 then press Alt + X.
Open Character Map (search “Character Map” in Start), tick “Advanced view”, search for “numero sign”, then Select and Copy.

Mac

Press Control + Command + Space to open the Character Viewer, search “numero sign”, and double-click the result.
With the Unicode Hex Input keyboard enabled (System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources), hold Option and type 2116.

Good to know

Don’t mix it up: It is sometimes imitated with the letter N and the masculine ordinal indicator º (U+00BA).

Tip: Put a space between № and the number in Russian and Ukrainian style, as in № 5.

Display: the character itself is always the same code point, but its shape comes from the font on the device showing it. If you see an empty box, the font lacks this glyph—the text is still correct.
